Who'll be the pride of Pompey?

STAFF, volunteers and members of Shorehamand District Mental Health Association will be donning their running shoes to raise funds for a new headquarters.

They will be taking part in the Great South Run at Portsmouth on Sunday (10th October 2004).

The charity, based at the Old School House in Ham Road, Shoreham, for more than 10 years has outgrown the building and needs more space to cope with the increasing number of referrals it receives.

The association is the only day centre serving the Adur area for people with long-term mental health problems.

The Great South Run coincides with World Mental Health Day and there is an information stand at the nearby Civic centre in Ham Road this week to raise awareness about mental health.

Sponsorship forms are available for the run and there is also an art and craft display of members' work.

The majority of those taking part in the run from the association have never run in an event of this size, so they have developed their own training programme. Last month they did a practice 10-kilometre run at Littlehampton, where one of their runners, Jason Anderton, finished first.

The Great South Run is the largest of it's type in the south and will attract about 15,000 runners including top athletes.

The association is fielding 15 runners. Local MP Tim Loughton dropped into the centre last week to find out about their fund-raising efforts and to wish them luck in the race.
