Mark Langdale's Charity Challenges

Leigh Gibbins and Mark Langdale

Mark Langdale works at Glebelands Day Centre and has been a volunteer at the Old School House for 4 years where he has been involved in taking members swimming and holding weekly quiz sessions. To help raise funds for SDMHA, he has taken part in the London Marathon and in 2003 he ran the New York Marathon, raising £2000.

Whilst Mark understands the constraints on funding, he believes that as such vital work is done by the SDMHA, and being the only day centre in Adur for people with long term mental health problems, they should have access to more core funding.

One of the reasons he is doing it is to raise awareness of mental health issues and believes that by doing these treks will bring attention to mental health in a positive way.

Mark's Charity Treks

Mark decided to undertake a 'triple trek'- three treks in one year - to challenge his own skills and abilities and also to raise a considerable sum for the premises fund.

The first stage of the triple trek was 18 days trekking to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patar. The 2nd was 9 days trekking to the summit of Kilimanjaro, which he completed with a colleague, Leigh Gibbins. Each trek is challenging as he and Leigh both suffered from altitude sickness which is a problem that no amount of training can prepare you for.

The final trek - which commenced on January 20th 2006 - is through the jungles and mountains of Ecuador and to Machu Pichu, one of the 7 wonders of the modern world, so the last trek will finish on a high note!

Mark pays for all the trips himself so any sponsorship money raised goes directly to the Association.

Charity Parachute Jump in June 2006

On 29th June 2006, Mark made a 3,500 foot parachute jump at Headcorn Parachute Club in Kent and raised some much needed cash for Shoreham and District Mental Health Association funds.
