Shoreham and District Mental Health Association is a registered charity and, from June 2006, also a limited company.
The Association was originally established in 1982 to promote the interests of people who have experienced mental illness living in the Adur district. We initially set up a weekly social club for ex-patients but in 1986 we managed to secure the use of 4 West Street, Shoreham, to run a Day Centre five days a week.
In 1992 it was decided to look for larger premises, and after raising the necessary £25,000 via fundraising activities, donations and grants from West Sussex County Council and many local charities and businesses, we renovated 'The Old School House', Ham Road, Shoreham, opening five days a week. The building belongs to Adur District Council, who have kindly let us use the building for a peppercorn rent.
In April 1993, we secured funding to open the centre at weekends, and from April 2001, we are now able to open on bank holidays during the year, including Christmas and New Year.
We have an excellent reputation and rapport with both the Day Hospital and the Adur Community Mental Health Team based at Carters Lane House in Shoreham-by-Sea, from where clinical help is available and from which we accept referrals.
